Overwhelming majority of Belarusian citizens not to support attempts to destabilize their country - Lavrov
MINSK. Feb 4 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov believes that the population of Belarus will not support the attempts to disturb the political situation inside their country.
"As far as Belarus itself is concerned, attempts to disturb the political situation inside the country are unlikely to be met with support from the overwhelming majority of the republic's population," Lavrov said in an interview with Italian magazine Limes.
This was vividly demonstrated by the results of the October 2015 presidential elections, during which Belarusian citizens spoke out in favor of political stability inside their country, and stronger ties with Russia, including within the Russia-Belarus Union and the Eurasian Economic Union, the Russian foreign minister said.
Any export of revolutions - communist, democratic and any other revolutions - causes enormous damage to the people of states that become subject to such experiments, Lavrov said.
"Such practices, which represent a grave violation of international law, seriously undermine global and regional stability," he said.
"In our opinion, it is important to, once again, reaffirm the principle of non-interference in internal affairs documented in the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act of the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe, including the unacceptability of any subversive actions, and support for a change of power in other states by unconstitutional methods. We believe that the Helsinki+40 process within the OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe) has prepared the groundwork for continuing serious discussions both on this topic and the entire range of European security issues," the Russian foreign minister said.
