Nazarbayev proposes to convene UN conference on principles of intl law in 2016
ASTANA. March 2 (Interfax) - Kazakhstan has proposed to convene a top-level international conference of the United Nations in 2016 in order to reaffirm principles of international law and to restore confidence between states, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said.
"There is a need for a new efficient system of international security. It is also necessary to bolster the UN role in the Security Council, the resolution of conflicts. It is time to modernize the UN Charter, with the mandatory preservation of fundamentals of international law," Nazarbayev told representatives of diplomatic missions in Astana on Wednesday.
The compliance of countries with international norms and their international commitments remains a cornerstone of the contemporary world order, "which, regretfully, has been frequently breached, especially in the recent period, and conflicts have been breaking out because of this, because international obligations are not met," the president said.
