Planned 'Savchenko list' unrelated to supremacy of law idea - Kosachyov
MOSCOW. March 9 (Interfax) - The initiative of some European Parliament members suggesting that 'a Savchenko list' be drawn up is a political act of Russia's ill-wishers and banal pressure on the court, Konstantin Kosachyov, Chairman of the Federation Council International Affairs Committee, has said.
"This is pressure on the court, which is totally non-legal in its form and totally banal in its essence. This initiative does not bear the slightest relation to the supremacy of law, or democracy, or human rights to which the European Parliament loves to refer so much," Kosachyov told Interfax on Wednesday, commenting on the aforesaid initiative.
"This is a sheer political act of Russia's hardcore ill-wishers taken on the eve of a pending decision to extend personal sanctions imposed by the EU two years ago," he said.
"We can only hope that, this time, the European Commission has enough respect for international law and elementary common sense and prevents political Russophobes from driving EU-Russia relations into another senseless and, possibly, irreparable deadlock," Kosachyov said.
