Russia calls for problems around Brazilian president impeachment to be resolved in line with law, without outside interference
MOSCOW. April 18 (Interfax) - The Russian Foreign Ministry said it is closely watching the situation in Brazil around the impeachment of its president, and warned against outside interference.
"We are closely watching the souring situation in Brazil caused by the decision of the lower house of the National Congress to start the procedure of impeachment of this country's president," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said.
Brazil is Russia's strategic partner with whom it shares many years of successful cooperation in various multilateral formats such as the United Nations, G20 and BRICS, Zakharova said in a commentary released on Monday evening.
"We hope the problems that could arise in this difficult domestic political period for our partner will be resolved in the framework of the constitutional legal field, without outside interference," Zakharova said.
It was reported that the lower house of the Brazilian parliament voted 367 to 137 to proceed with the impeachment of the country's president, Dilma Rousseff, who is accused of violating the country's laws.
Rousseff is accused of manipulating budget funds, in particular, using bank loans to whitewash the state of affairs in the national economy, and close the budget deficit ahead of the elections. The president denies any wrongdoing.
