Markin says Russia may create unified investigative body in foreseeable future

MOSCOW. May 13 (Interfax) - Vladimir Markin, an official representative of the Investigative Committee, does not rule out the creation of a unified investigative body in Russia in the future, saying it is currently prevented by the economic situation.

"There was a period when they talked about the creation of a unified investigative body. But now I think this [idea] is not a priority due to the recent financial situation caused by the crisis," Markin said during a meeting with students of the Department of Journalism of Moscow State University in Moscow on Friday.

At the same time, he said such a legislative body can be formed if there are grounds for a decision made by the country's administration in the foreseeable future. "It's now too early to speak about that. I think [it will happen] in the very near future; it's not an issue for us, but for the country's administration, the legislators; such a decision will be made if there are grounds for that," Markin said.

He recalled that the Investigative Committee, the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service now have investigative functions in Russia.
