Stavropol resident sentenced to six-year imprisonment for attempt to join ISIL

ROSTOV-ON-DON. May 24 (Interfax) - The North Caucasus District Military Court in Rostov-on-Don convicted Mavlud Kerimov, a Stavropol native, for an attempt to joint the Islamic State (ISIL), a terrorist organization banned in Russia.

The defendant was sentenced to a six-year imprisonment in a general regime penal colony with custodial restraint for a year, an Interfax correspondent reported from the courtroom.

Kerimov was charged with facilitating terrorist activity and attempt to participate in a terrorist organization.

According to the investigators, Kerimov, who studied in Stavropol State Medical University, attempted to enlist two students of the university to participate in hostilities in Syria alongside the illegal armed groups from March to June of 2014. However, they refused to participate.

Moreover, the defendant attempted to enter Syria via the territory of Turkey to join ISIL. He was arrested by Turkish law enforcement officials in the city of Aksaray, upon the demand of the Russian General Consulate in Istanbul, on July 6, 2014.

Kerimov was deported to Russia on July 10, 2014
