Gang member killed after opening fire on policemen in Dagestan - source
MAKHACHKALA. May 26 (Interfax) - Security services are working to identify a militant who was killed in the Suleiman-Stalsky district of Dagestan, in Russia's North Caucasus, on Thursday morning, a source in the region's law enforcement agencies told Interfax.
"This morning, in the village of Kasumkent of the Suleiman-Stalsky district, law enforcement personnel tried to stop a suspicious man for an ID check, but he opened fire on police officers. He was eliminated by return fire on the spot," he said.
The preliminary information available indicates that he was a member of the 'Yuzhnoye (Southern)' gang, active in the territory of Dagestan, he said.
There were no casualties or injuries among police and civilians, the source said.
