Russia should hold positions on global arms market - Medvedev

GORKI. May 30 (Interfax) - Russia should hold its positions on the global arms market, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said.

"We have good indicators in global arms trade, we are essentially the second country to supply weapons to the international market in such amounts. We need to hold these positions," Medvedev said at a meeting with his deputies on Monday.

The prime minister said Russia can only hold its positions on the global arms market if it has a modern defense industry.

"You can't deceive anyone now, big countries or what used to be called third world countries, that is, developing economies. Everyone wants to get state-of-the-art products, and that's the kind of products we should make," he said.

Medvedev also said Russia needs a modern defense industry that is capable of meeting the needs of the Russian military, and be competitive on the global market.
