Georgian president believes national political forces united about entry into NATO
TBILISI. July 8 (Interfax) - All Georgian political forces agree that the republic should enter into NATO, Georgian President Giorgi Margvelashvili, who is taking part in the NATO summit in Warsaw, said.
"Before the Warsaw summit, the parliament adopted a declaration to confirm the strong will of all political forces for Georgia's integration with NATO. That document was supported by opposition parties and the ruling political party," Margvelashvili told Georgian reporters.
He said that Georgian political forces were capable of unity in the interests of the republic.
Yet the president's opinion is not shared by some in Georgia.
Democratic Movement - United Georgia opposition party leader, former Georgian parliament speaker Nino Burjanadze repeatedly criticized plans of the Georgian administration to enter into NATO.
"Georgia's entry into any structure in a divided state would be wrong and harmful," party political secretary Gigla Baramidze told the press in May. He called for the holding of a referendum on the accession to NATO.
