One killed, several injured during Yerevan police building seizure - media

YEREVAN. July 17 (Interfax) - One person has been killed and several others injured after a group of armed people seized the police and Internal Troops building in Yerevan's Erebuni district, according to the Yerkir Media television channel.

The channel did not name the victims.

A number of local media reported that Yerevan deputy police chief Valery Osipyan is being held hostage.

Troops have been deployed to the building, Armenian police chief Vladimir Gasparyan is at the scene.

On Sunday morning the building was seized by the group of armed people who demanded a release of the coordinator of the Founding Parliament opposition group, Jirair Sefilian, who is held in custody on charges of illegal acquisition and possession of a firearm.

At dawn on Sunday a group of gunmen rammed through the gate and broke onto the police grounds, Armenian media reported.

The Armenian police will release a statement shortly, the police told Interfax.

Sefilian was arrested on June 20. During the inquiry it transpired that he and a group of other people had been plotting a number of armed attacks on buildings, structures, telecommunications, including Yerevan's television tower.

According to the inquiry, the group members were planning these criminal acts after the April escalation in the Karabakh conflict zone.
