Federation Council committee chairman says one should talk tough with DPRK, but not to corner

MOSCOW. July 19 (Interfax) - The world community should conduct negotiations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's (DPRK) more toughly, but not corner the country and give it an opportunity to develop economically, Federation Council Defense and Security Committee Chairman Viktor Ozerov said.

"The Russian side has always insisted on and stands by the position that the negotiations are necessary, it is necessary to allow the DPRK's government to abandon the blackmail of the world community and receive an opportunity of development of the country's economy, first and foremost, to feed the people of the DPRK," he told Interfax on Tuesday, commenting on the DPRK's ballistic missile launches.

He said that DPRK takes the defiant attitude and these launches should become the next subject in finding measures of the entire world community, first and foremost, as part of the Contact Group on the DPRK and in UN Security Council as well.

"I believe one must not limit with the adoption of the next resolution once again. It is necessary to take more specific measures on the entire array of issues I mentioned. The process of negotiations should be tough on the world community's part, but on the other hand, we should not corner the DPRK," he said.

The DPRK launched three ballistic missiles on Tuesday, the South Korean media said with a reference to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Scud-type missiles were launched from the North Hwanghae province between 5:45 a.m. and 6:05 a.m. and travelled from 500km to 600km, the media said.

The South Korean armed forces closely monitor the situation in the DPRK, the media said.

The DPRK launched two ballistic missiles on June 22. On July 9 the DPRK launched a ballistic missile from a submarine.
