Participants in sacred procession move to Kyiv by foot despite calls of law enforcers to use buses

KYIV. July 26 (Interfax) - A column of participants in the sacred procession organized by the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate continued to advance to Kyiv Tuesday afternoon along the Zhytomyr highway, the police are in charge of law and order.

"The column continues to move on foot," Interfax was told at the press service of the Kyiv region police.

The press service said law enforcers are taking all measures necessary to ensure the safety of the marchers. One of the lanes of the highway to Zhytomyr was cleared for the procession.

The column is heading for the Church of St. Feodosiy of Chernihiv who is considered the patron saint of liquidators of the Chernobyl NPP accident in Kyiv's Sviatoshynsky district where a prayer ceremony is due.

Earlier on Tuesday law enforcement officers urged marchers to take buses to the site, instead of walking.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Arsen Avakov announced that the National Guard and police would prevent marchers from continuing their procession through Kyiv after the discovery of military hand grenades and a fake mine.
