Five forest fires still burning in Far East regions

KHABAROVSK. Aug 4 (Interfax) - Forest fires continue to burn in four regions of Russia's Far East, and three fires out of eight were extinguished in the past 24 hours, the press service of the Far East Federal District's forestry department said on Thursday.

Fires were recorded in Kamchatka, the Magadan region, Yakutia and the Sakhalin region. One of the fires was contained. A total of 270 hectares of forest were destroyed by fire in the past 24 hours, the press service said.

As many as 228 people, 21 units of equipment and one aircraft are combating the forest fires in the Far East's regions.

A total of 1,138 forest fires covering an area of more than 633,300 hectares have broken out in the district in this wildfire season. The district saw 1,078 forest fires across 264,600 hectares in the same period of 2015, it said.
