Armenia capable of protecting its rights, independence - Sargsyan

YEREVAN. Sept 21 (Interfax) - Armenia is strong enough to protect its freedom yet this freedom has to be defended not only against external threats, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said.

"In an ideal world, a right should generate power. But the contemporary world and our environs are far from being ideal. Circumstances under which power generates a right prevail. We have the power to protect our rights and our freedom," Sargsyan said at a military parade in Yerevan which marked the 25th anniversary of Armenia's independence.

Freedom and independence need protection not only against external threats, he said. "Our citizens should also be free because a free person and free society are far more efficient. We can and should build a country which will protect a free citizen and free society. People who are not free theoretically can do a lot, but they will not be happy," the Armenian president said.

Armenia has done a lot over 25 years of independence, he said. "We sometimes made mistakes and sometimes went to extremes but, on the whole, we took the right path. We are building our happiness through peaceful creation. The formula of our progress is very simple: work, work and work. We should multiply our achievements with labor and should protect them on our own," Sargsyan said.
