Crimean peninsula getting closer to mainland Russia - scientists' discovery

MOSCOW. Oct 4 (Interfax) - Specialists from the Russian Institute of Applied Astronomy, using a radio-interferometer complex of telescopes called Kvazar-KVO, have detected Crimea's tectonic movement towards mainland Russia, the Institute's Director Alexander Ipatov said.

"At the time of Crimea joining Russia, we attempted to answer the question: where is Crimea moving to? And we determined that it is moving towards Russia," Ipatov told journalists on Tuesday.

Although this may sound like a joke, it is a result of serious research, he said.

"In reality this is not a joke, though it is very much like one. Crimea is moving approximately northeastward," Ipatov said.
