Militants backed by armored vehicles attempt to break through to eastern Aleppo - Russian Defense Ministry
MOSCOW. Oct 28 (Interfax-AVN) - Units of militants have attempted to break through to eastern Aleppo in Syria, Lieut. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, the chief of the main operational directorate of the Russian armed forces' General Staff, told journalists on Friday.
"Starting from 11:20 a.m. today, on October 28, units of militants, taking advantage of a moratorium on the use of Russian and Syrian air forces in the Aleppo area, made an attempt to break through to the eastern part of the city. The offensive was arranged by three units west of Aleppo and was generally directed at the Assad Academy, with support of 20 tanks and 15 armored fighting vehicles. All this was accompanied by a fire storm from rocket launchers and artillery," Rudskoi said.
Simultaneously, terrorists from eastern Aleppo launched a counterattack in the area of a humanitarian corridor near the Souk el-Hai market, he said.
"All this caused numerous casualties among civilians and government forces. All attacks by the militants were rebuffed, and eight tanks and five armored fighting vehicles were destroyed," he said.
