Court upholds arrest of Federal Guard Service Gen. Lopyrev

MOSCOW. Dec 2 (Interfax) - The Third District Military Court has upheld the arrest of Federal Guard Service Gen. Gennady Lopyrev, who is charged with corruption, his lawyer Ruslan Zakalyuzhny told Interfax on Friday.

"Today, the appellate court has upheld the decision to take our client into custody," the defense lawyer said on Friday.

He said he disagrees with the decision made by the Third District Military Court today and intends to file an appeal.

According to earlier reports, the 94th Garrison Military Court on November 26 ordered the arrest of Lopyrev until January 23 at investigators' request.

At the end of last week, the Investigative Committee press service said that a criminal case had been opened against Lopyrev on charges of receiving major bribes.

The investigation had determined that Lopyrev had accepted bribes from heads of a number of private companies for general patronage in concluding and carrying out government contracts on repair and maintenance services.

Lopyrev is charged with massive bribery (Russian Criminal Code Article 290 Part 6). Zakalyuzhny said the general does not admit his guilt.

The criminal case was opened by the Investigative Committee's main directorate for special investigations jointly with the Federal Security Service (FSB), based on Federal Guard Service's documents.
