Tajik border guards kill 14 drug traffickers, seize over 900 kg of drugs near Afghan frontier in 2016 - Tajikistan's national security service

DUSHANBE. Dec 22 (Interfax) - Border guard troops of the Tajik State National Security Committee conducted 88 special operations and were involved in 27 armed clashes with drug smugglers near the Tajikistan-Afghanistan border in 2016.

In their armed clashes with border violators, Tajik border guards killed 14 intruders, injuring six and detaining 18, the spokesman for the Committee's main border department, Muhamman Ulugkhodjayev, said on Thursday, following the Committee's closing meeting which was attended by its chairman Saimumin Yatimov, Tajik Border Troops Commander Li. Gen. Rajabali Rahmonali, and chiefs of the Committee's departments concerned.

Border troops acting together with other Tajik security agencies suppressed illegal circulation of 904.2 kilograms of drugs, including 21.1 kilograms of heroin, 128.2 kilograms of opium, and 755.6 kilograms of hashish, Ulugkhodjayev said.

Also, Tajik border troops seized 27 pieces of fire arms, more than 1,300 bullets, three hand grenades, 296 kilograms of explosives and 24 pieces of combat ammunition, he said.

In total, 229 fugitives were detained and turned in to law enforcement authorities by Tajik border troops in 2016, Ulugkhodjayev said.
