All of Russian Navy's carrier-based Su-33 aircraft to be equipped for more accurate bombing
MOSCOW. Jan 13 (Interfax-AVN) - The Russian Defense Ministry has decided to provide the entire fleet of carrier-based Sukhoi Su-33 fighter aircraft with systems that significantly increase the accuracy of airborne weapons, the ministry told Interfax-AVN on Friday.
"The decision was made on the basis of the real combat experience gained during missile and bombing attacks on the enemy carried out by Su-33 fighters based on the Admiral Kuznetsov heavy aircraft-carrier already equipped with such systems," the source said.
Today around ten Su-33 are requipped with the special SVP-24-33 computing subsystem, he said.
"Having this system enabled the carrier-based Su-33s in Syria to apply unguided bombs with accuracy characteristic of a guided weapon. During missile and bombing strikes maximum deviation from the target did not exceed several meters," the source said.
According to experts, currently the Russian army has around 20 Su-33 fighters in service. Until recently these were used as interceptor-fighters with no possibility to work with bombs and missile against ground and maritime targets. Now this has become possible.
The installation of SVP-24-33s will take place after the aircraft have undergone routine maintenance at the aviation repair plant in Pushkino near St. Petersburg, the source said. "The SVP-24-33s will be installed on Su-33 aircraft in 2017-2018," the source said.
It was reported earlier that the SVP-24 system adapted for use by Su-24M frontline bombers and Tupolev Tu-22M3 (SVP-24-22) long-range missile carriers was tested in combat in Syria.
Specialists said that all aircraft equipped with SVP-24s acquired an ability to share tactical information with other similar machines and ground command and control centers, which makes the product part of the class of "smart" net centric warfare systems.
