Supreme Court amnesties FSB Capt. Gormakh convicted for disclosing state secret, expunges his conviction

MOSCOW. Jan 19 (Interfax) - The Russian Supreme Court has softened the sentence to a suspended sentence and amnestied Federal Security Service Capt. Anton Gormakh, who had been sentenced to 1.5 years in prison for disclosing a state secret.

"Change the sentence handed out by the Moscow District Military Court, consider the punishment given to Gormakh in the form of 1.5 years in jail to be a suspended sentence with a two-year probation period based on Article 73 of the Russian Criminal Code (suspended prison sentence)," the chairman of the appellate collegium on servicemen's affairs said in the decision.

The court also exempted the convict from the punishment due to the amnesty declared for the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

"Exempt Gormakh from punishment due to the amnesty and expunge his conviction due to amnesty," the judge said.

The appeal was considered behind closed doors.

The Moscow District Military Court earlier found Gormakh guilty of disclosing a state secret and sentenced him to 1.5 years in prison, and also banned him from working in positions associated with state secrets for two years.
