Russia, U.S. could reach new format of cooperation after leaders' talk - Kosachyov

MOSCOW. Jan 29 (Interfax) - The first telephone conversation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and United States President Donald Trump gives hope of the two countries switching to a new format of cooperation, according to Konstantin Kosachyov, head of the Federation Council International Affairs Committee.

"I would like to believe that behind this brief listing of the issues [they] touched upon is a mutual, not just ours, interest in reaching a new format of cooperation - a partnership, not a rivalry," Kosachyov wrote on Facebook.

The Kremlin press office said earlier that the Russian and U.S. leaders spoke by telephone on Saturday evening and agreed to maintain regular personal contact and determine the date and place of a meeting in person. The presidents called for coordination of their anti-ISIL operations and agreed to improve partnership on strategic issues, as well as on Iran, North Korea and Ukraine. The two leaders also stressed the importance of restoring trade and economic relations.
