Astana actively preparing for meeting of joint operational group for Syria - Kazakh foreign minister

ASTANA. Feb 3 (Interfax) - Kazakh diplomats are actively preparing for a session of the joint operational group for Syria in Astana, Kazakhstan's Foreign Minister Kairat Abdrakhmanov said.

"The Kazakh side is actively preparing for the meeting," he told reporters in Astana on Friday.

"As is known, we [in Astana] hosted successful talks on settling the situation in Syria on January 23-24 that were supported by the president of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The three guarantor countries of this process - Russia, Turkey and Iran - adopted a joint document following them. And now, as a follow-up to the agreements reached on January 23-24, we have received a request to arrange the first meeting to discuss issues concerning monitoring over the truce established under the December 29, 2016 agreement," Abdrakhmanov said.

Delegations of Russia, Turkey and Iran, as well as a UN representative, are expected to attend the meeting, he said.

"All of the conditions needed for a fruitful meeting will be provided," the Kazakh foreign minister said.

"At the moment, we are gathering information about the composition of the delegations that will arrive in the capital of Kazakhstan," he added.
