Sobyanin vows to hold responsible those behind Moscow tunnel collapse

MOSCOW. March 2 (Interfax) - The Moscow authorities will investigate the accident that occurred in Kaluzhskoye Shosse, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said.

"The accident occurred during the construction of a tunnel in Kaluzhskoye Shosse. One worker was killed and three were injured. We are providing the necessary assistance," Sobyanin wrote on his Vkontakte account.

"We will conduct a probe. The culprits will be hold responsible," Sobyanin said.

In the meantime, Yulia Ivanova, an official with the Investigative Committee's Department for Moscow, said investigators had opened a criminal case on the basis of breaches of safety rules in construction regarding the tunnel collapse in southwestern Moscow.

"A criminal case was opened based on Part 2 of Article 216 of the Russian Criminal Code (breach of safety rules in construction)," Ivanova told Interfax on Thursday.

According to the information possessed by the investigators, a metal construction collapsed during work on a road tunnel in the area of the 23rd kilometer of the Kaluzhskoye Shosse in the New Moscow area in the morning of March 2.

"According to tentative information, one person was killed and the other victims, whose number is being determined, are being given all necessary medical assistance. Investigators and criminalists now continue working with the rescue services at the accident site," Ivanova said.
