KHABAROVSK. April 14 (Interfax) - A Khabarovsk court has sentenced a district hospital doctor who intended to go to Syria to help militants to five years in a high-security penal colony, the Russian Federal Security Service's department for the territory said.

According to the special services, the doctor had taken an active interest in the activities of international terrorist organizations beginning in 2015.

"Viewing prohibited videos on the Internet, he was inspired by the ideas of terrorism and made a decision to join the international terrorist organization as a field doctor," the report said.

In July 2016, the doctor was going to leave for Turkey to cross the Syrian border there. He was not able to fulfill plans as he was detained by Federal Security Service officials.

The man was found guilty of preparing to participate in the work of an organization that is recognized as terrorist in accordance with the Russian legislation.
