Russian diplomats visit Libya, have meetings in Tripoli, no contacts with parliament seated in Tobruk - Bogdanov

MOSCOW. April 26 (Interfax) - Russian diplomats have visited Libya to meet with representatives of the Tripoli government and the United Nations, yet they did not have contacts with parliament members in Tobruk, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said on Wednesday.

"I returned from Tripoli yesterday; we communicated with the leadership, Mr. al-Sarraj [head of the Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj]," Bogdanov told reporters.

UN Special Envoy for Libya Martin Kobler also took part in the meetings, he said.

"We discussed every issue," Bogdanov said.

He added that he did not visit Tobruk, the seat of the Libyan parliament, which has refused to recognize the government.

"No, we did not visit Tobruk so far," the deputy minister said.

The standoff between the Libyan parliament seated in Tobruk in the east of the country and the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord continues. The parliament has been recognized by the international community, including Russia, as a legitimate legislative authority and enjoys the support of the national army. The Libyan government has also been recognized by the international community, but has yet to be recognized by the national parliament.
