Russia, U.S. should fight terrorism together - Deputy Foreign Minister Antonov

MOSCOW. May 18 (Interfax) - Russia and the United States should fight international terrorism together, many of their strategic goals coincide, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Anatoly Antonov said.

The State Duma international affairs committee unanimously endorsed Antonov's candidacy for Russian ambassador to the U.S. earlier on Thursday.

"We should fight together, primarily against international terrorism as the main evil recognized as such by everyone. I believe that many strategic goals and objectives of the U.S. and Russia coincide," Antonov told reporters after the committee meeting.

"Today, a lot has been said that there are too many negative things in Russian-U.S. relations, that is regrettable [...] We face the big task of correcting this tilt, no one is talking about surrendering any positions. We are talking about convincing our colleagues from the U.S. that good-neighborly, equal, mutually respectful relations are in the interests of the people of Russia and the U.S.," Antonov said.

"Both Russia and the U.S. favor the strengthening of the international non-proliferation regime - we are fighting together to preserve the treaty on the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and other mechanisms: the convention on the prohibition of biological and chemical weapons, which only strengthen international peace," he said.
