Moscow calls for avoiding escalation in Korean Peninsula - Peskov
MOSCOW. May 23 (Interfax) - Russia's stance on the problem of North Korea is consistent, and Moscow calls on all parties to exercise restraint and welcomes any steps aimed at de-escalating tensions, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
"You know that Russia's policy toward the Korea problem is consistent and well-known: we call on all parties to show restraint and avoid any steps that could lead to an escalation of tensions, and we also welcome any steps that can help de-escalate these tensions," Peskov told reporters on Tuesday when asked about Russia's expectations from an upcoming meeting between President Vladimir Putin and South Korea's special presidential envoy Song Young-gil on Wednesday, as regards ways to settle the situation surrounding the North Korean nuclear problem.
The Russian president will receive a South Korean presidential envoy who "will bring certain ideas, certain messages from the new president," Peskov said.
The idea of a meeting with the special envoy emerged during a recent telephone conversation between the two leaders," he said.
"You know that our South Korean friends have already had similar contacts in a number of other capitals, including Tokyo," Peskov said.
