Russia records 7, Turkey 6 truce breaches in Syria in past 24 hours

MOSCOW. May 30 (Interfax-AVN) - Russian inspectors have recorded seven breaches of the cessation of hostilities in Syria, and Turkish inspectors have registered six such violations over the past 24 hours, the Russian Defense Ministry said on Tuesday.

"Most instances of random small arms fire were seen in the areas held by the Jabhat al-Nusra and ISIL [Islamic State] terrorist groups [both banned in Russia]," the ministry said.

The Russian part of the joint Russian-Turkish commission probing violations of the cessation of hostilities has recorded four instances of gunfire in the Damascus governorate, two in the Latakia governorate and one in the Hama governorate over the past 24 hours.

Turkish members of the commission recorded three truce breaches in the Damascus governorate, two in the Daraa governorate and one in the Latakia governorate.

"The situation in the de-escalation areas has been assessed as stable," the ministry said.

The commission has been monitoring compliance with the truce in Syria under the memorandum on setting up de-escalation areas in Syria, which was signed by Russia, Iran and Turkey on May 4, 2017.
