Abkhazian opposition calls for political, constitutional reforms

SUKHUM. June 29 (Interfax) - The government of Abkhazia must implement the Agreement to stabilize the socio-political situation in full, the opposition Amtsakhara party said in a resolution approved at the party's ninth congress in Sukhum on Thursday.

"In the event of a failure to implement the provisions of the section concerning the election of a Constitutional Court judge and a CEC [Central Election Commission] member within nine days, Amtsakhara reserves the right to unilaterally withdraw from the Agreement with all ensuing consequences," the document says.

The agreement in question was signed on December 19, 2016. Under the agreement, representatives from the Opposition Forces' Bloc were to be appointed to a number of senior positions in the republic.

The party delegates also urged "revisiting the so-called passport issue of residents of eastern districts of Abkhazia in strict accordance with the constitution of Abkhazia and reviewing the 'Law on the legal status of foreign citizens in Abkhazia' whereby Georgian residents of the border areas were stripped of Abkazian citizenship," the delegates said in the document.

The republic's ex-president Alexander Ankvab, who spoke during the congress, urged the Abkhazian opposition forces to carry out the political work of preparing for the next presidential election.
