Council of Europe satisfied with level of joint work with Russia
MOSCOW. July 13 (Interfax) - The Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe (CoE), Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, has noted Russia's activeness in joining various important CoE conventions.
The CoE sees how active Russia has been in working with the CoE by actively joining important conventions of the CoE, Battaini-Dragoni said at a meeting with Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko.
On Thursday, Battaini-Dragoni met with a Russian deputy foreign minister, and this meeting revealed an absolutely interesting picture of the CoE's cooperation with Russia, she said.
It was said at the meeting that a number of conventions are in the final stage of ratification, including a very important one, to counter the financing of terrorism, which is now in parliament, the CoE deputy secretary general said.
The others include a convention on combating human trafficking and one on trade in stolen works of art, Battaini-Dragoni said.
This proves once again that Russia has been a most active participant in the inter-governmental segment of CoE work, she said, noting her satisfaction with the level of cooperation.
Russia is a very important member of the CoE, and like many other countries it faces a whole host of problems, among which are terrorism and migration, the CoE deputy secretary general said.
To resolve these problems, Europe needs to create a common legal space, she said, and to create a common European legal space Russia's contribution is absolutely essential, Battaini-Dragoni said.
