Peacekeepers led by Shoigu give South Ossetians spark of hope - president Bibilov

TSKHINVAL. July 14 (Interfax-AVN) - South Ossetia had its security provided for by peacekeepers 25 years ago, the president of the republic, Anatoly Bibilov, said.

"Peacekeepers did everything, at the cost of their own lives, to achieve peace in South Ossetia. It was peacekeepers led by Sergei Shoigu who secured the peace. Thanks to the peacekeepers, our people got a spark of hope in their hearts," Bibilov said on Friday during festivities on the occasion of the 25th anniversary since peacekeeping forces were introduced to South Ossetia.

Thanksgiving prayers were performed at all churches across the republic. A bike show is now taking place at the center of Tskhinval.

During the Georgian-Ossetian conflict in the 1990s, Shoigu led a mixed control commission in charge of stabilizing the situation in the region.
