Moldovan president vows not to allow new war in Transdniestria

MOSCOW. July 21 (Interfax) - Moldovan President Igor Dodon told the Izvestia newspaper that he would not allow a new military conflict to break out in Transdniestria because such a scenario would put an end to Moldova's statehood, adding that he was ready to find compromises with Tiraspol and intended to resolve this problem through talks.

"There should be no military scenario for Transdniestria. I believe that the problem needs to be resolved only through negotiations, and we need to work to meet each other half-way. Certainly, we have some 'hotheads', but there are very few of them. [...] A military scenario would mean the loss of Moldova's statehood. We see how it turned out for other countries. We are ready to strike compromises in order to unite the country. All of our partners both in the West and in the East recognize that," Dodon said.

The Izvestia article also said that media outlets, including those in Moldova, have reported recently that Chisinau is preparing to integrate the unrecognized Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic by force. President Dodon, for his part, has called on people not to pay any attention to reports about Chisinau's allegedly aggressive plans, Izvestia said.
