Russian Investigative Committee's central staff to investigate deadly fire in Rostov-on-Don private homes area

MOSCOW. Aug 22 (Interfax) - Russian Investigative Committee Chairman Alexander Bastrykin has ordered the committee's central staff to supervise the inquiry into the death of a man in the Rostov-on-Don fire.

"Bastrykin has ordered the Russian Investigative Committee's central staff to supervise the progress and outcomes of the preliminary inquiry conducted by the committee's investigative agency in the Rostov region into the death of a man found under the debris of the fire which occurred in an area of private homes in the Rostov-on-Don center yesterday," committee spokesperson Svetlana Petrenko told Interfax on Tuesday.

The Rostov department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Interfax earlier that rescuers had found a body under the fire debris in Rostov-on-Don.

According to the Emergency Situations Ministry, the fire in an area of private houses in Rostov-on-Don began at 12:52 p.m. Moscow time on Monday. More than a hundred homes went up in flames over an area of 10,000 square meters. Open flames have been put out, water is being poured over the fire scene, and debris is being cleaned up. As many as 650 people were evacuated from the fire zone.

Fifty-eight people have sought medical aid. Nine have been hospitalized.
