Lavrov, Mogherini discuss Syria, Iran and N. Korea at NYC meeting

MOSCOW/BRUSSELS. Sept 20 (Interfax) - Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has met with Federica Mogherini, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, on the sidelines of the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly in New York, the Russian Foreign Ministry's website reported.

"The meeting addressed primary aspects of Russia-EU relations. There was an exchange of opinions on a series of pressing international problems, among them the situation on the Korean Peninsula and in Syria," the ministry said.

The European External Action Service (EEAS) confirmed the meeting.

"A number of issues was discussed, most notably the situation in Syria, ahead of the EU-hosted high level event on the future of Syria and the region that will take place on Thursday in New York; the Iran nuclear deal, ahead of the ministerial meeting on the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) that Federica Mogherini will chair tomorrow; the latest worrying developments in North Korea and the need to coordinate a united response to open up a credible political process to achieve the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula through peaceful means," the EEAS said in a communique.
