Poroshenko urges UN to recognize Ukrainian Holodomor as genocide
KYIV. Sept 20 (Interfax) - Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has called on UN members to recognize the 1932-1933 deadly famine in Ukraine (Holodomor) as an act of genocide.
"The United Nations has always played the leading role in making sure that crimes of the past may never e repeated (...) I am calling for all UN member states to make their own historical decision to recognize the Holodomor as an act of genocide," Poroshenko said during a general debate at the 72nd UN General Assembly session in New York on Wednesday.
The 72nd UN GA session coincides with the 85th anniversary of "one of the deadliest crimes" of the 20th century, the Holodomor, he said.
"It was an artificial famine in Ukraine in 1932-1933, organized by Stalin's totalitarian regime, which killed between seven and ten millions of Ukrainians," Poroshenko said.
