Russia-Pakistan tactical exercise to be held in Karachayevo-Cherkessiya Sept 22-Oct 4

MOSCOW. Sept 21 (Interfax-AVN) - The military of the Southern Military District have completed preparations for participation in the Friendship 2017 joint Russian-Pakistani tactical exercise, a representative of the Southern Military District, Col. Vadim Astafyev, told Interfax-AVN on Tuesday.

"The exercise will be conducted from September 22 to October 4 in the mountains and forests of the Republic of Karachayevo-Cherkessiya near the populated area of Nizhny Arkhyz," he said.

Russia will be represented in the exercise by some 100 servicemen from the Southern Military District motorized infantry brigade stationed in Karachayevo-Cherkessiya, he said.

In the course of the preparations, the military spent one month improving their ability to conduct reconnaissance-search and reconnaissance-ambush actions in the mountains and conducted over 20 mountain exercises in reconnaissance groups using modern mountaineering equipment.

Servicemen from the animal-pack transport company and a mountain unit's mortar group participated in a tactical-special exercise to deliver weapons and munitions to the mountainous areas of the Caucasus Range. Mortar units conducted firing drills from closed positions high in the mountains.

A similar Russian-Pakistani Friendship exercise involving servicemen from the Southern Military District was conducted in 2016 at the Rattu military school for mountain training and at the special operations forces training center in Cherat, Pakistan.
