Syrian opposition should unite to negotiate with Syrian govt in Geneva - Russian Foreign Ministry

MOSCOW. Sept 25 (Interfax) - Russia has urged the Syrian opposition to unite and be a responsible partner at the Geneva negotiations with the Syrian government, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on its website on Monday.

"Russia has issued an urgent call for the consolidation of the Syrian opposition as a responsible partner at the negotiations with the Syrian government at the Geneva negotiations to be held under the aegis of the UN without preconditions," the statement said.

The Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov, met with a delegation of the Hmeimim group of the Syrian opposition led by group chairman Ilian Masaad earlier in the day, the statement said.

"The meeting addressed a broad range of issues in the Syrian settlement process. The possibility of advancing the Syrian political process on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 by means of a broad intra-Syrian dialogue was discussed," the statement said.
