Spain's ambassador to Russia calls Russia's stance on Catalonia referendum perfect

MOSCOW. Sept 27 (Interfax) - Madrid appreciates Russia's stance on a referendum in Catalonia, which Moscow views as Spain's domestic affair, Spanish Ambassador to Russia Ignacio Ibanez said on Wednesday, following a meeting with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexei Meshkov.

"All of the statements issued by the Russian government are perfect, from our point of view. This morning I met with Deputy Foreign Minister Meshkov, who once again confirmed Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov's earlier statement that Russia's position remains unchanged," Ibanez told reporters.

"He once again emphasized that Russia views developments as Spain's domestic affair, that Russia is aware of legal and court decisions made in our country, and that it respects international legal regulations associated with this issue," Ibanez said.

In Meshkov's view, "following from the wonderful relations that exist between our countries, Russia's position will remain just as he has spelled out," Ibanez also said.
