Two militants involved in police officer's murder killed in Dagestan - source

MAKHACHKALA. Oct 2 (Interfax) - Two militants involved in the murder of a district police inspector have been killed in Dagestan, a source with knowledge of the situation told Interfax.

"The assailants were tracked down in the Babayurt district, where an anti-terrorist operation was launched the day before. The police tried to stop a suspicious vehicle for examination early on Monday morning. Unknown persons traveling by the car opened fire at the police. They were shot and killed in the gunfire exchange," the source said.

The shooters were later identified as the militants involved in the murder of a police officer in the Kizlyar district of Dagestan. "There is preliminary information that the murdered policeman's weapon was found in the car of the killed militants," the source said.

The policeman was found dead in the Kizlyar district of Dagestan on Saturday. The police cruiser was burned up in the Babayurt district of the republic. The assailants stole the officer's service-issue weapon. An anti-terrorist operation was launched on Sunday in the Babayurt and Kizilyurt districts where the assailants might have been hiding.
