Turkmenistan celebrating 26th independence day

ASHGABAT. Oct 27 (Interfax) - Turkmenistan is celebrating its 26th independence day.

"The foundation of a democratic, law-governed, and secular state and of the political, economic, and cultural development of our fatherland was laid 26 years ago with the proclamation of independence. This independence showed the unity, cohesion, dignity, patriotism, and peace-loving and friendly attitude of our people to the entire world [...] The worldwide renown of the independent state of Turkmenistan and historical events demonstrating the continuous growth of its international authority inspire our people to do great deeds and win great victories," Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow said in his greetings to compatriots.

"Large-scale projects testifying to the dynamic development of the national economy and the country as the whole are underway in the oil and gas sector, agriculture, the construction industry, the energy sector, culture, science, education, healthcare, sports, and tourism," Berdimuhamedow said.

The recent meeting of Turkmenistan's Council of Elders approved a national socioeconomic development program for 2018-2024; its primary objective is to strengthen the country's economic potential and international prestige, he said.

Major industrial, socio-cultural, scientific, educational, medical, and sports facilities are being commissioned in Ashgabat and in every region of the country to mark the country's main holiday. There are also concerts celebrating this event.
