Discussion of 1917 revolution should be based on objectivity, respect for past - Putin

MOSCOW. Nov 3 (Interfax) - Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the 1917 revolution had a huge influence on the development of Russia and the whole world and called for respect for the past in even the most heated discussions of the events that occurred in that era.

"The dramatic events of 1917 are an integral, complex part of our history. The revolution had a huge influence on the development of Russia and the whole world; it largely determined the political, economic, and social picture of the 20th century," Putin said in his address to participants in the international events devoted to the 100th anniversary of the revolution, which was posted on the Kremlin website.

"It is natural that public figures, scientists, and the media begin to deeply and comprehensive think about that era in the anniversary year, and state various, sometimes contradictory opinions and judgments," Putin said.

"I am certain that even the most heated polemic should be based on facts and documents, on an objective and respectful attitude to the past," Putin said.

Putin hopes that the meetings, which have drawn representatives from many countries, will contribute to this constructive debate and will strengthen relations with foreign colleagues and partners.
