De Mistura outlines vision of post-war Syria in 12-item document

BRUSSELS. Dec 2 (Interfax) - United Nations Special Envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura has presented a document outlining his vision of a post-war Syria to the participants in the intra-Syrian talks in Geneva for consideration and possible adjustment, the special envoy's office reported.

The unofficial document presented by de Mistura is entitled 'Special Envoy's 12 Living Intra-Syrian Essential Principles'.

"Over several rounds of talks, the Special Envoy periodically identified commonalities emerging from his separate consultations with the government and the opposition. These included 12 points of commonalities," the office said in a statement.

De Mistura's paper dated November 30, in particular, contains provisions on commitment to Syria's territorial integrity, democratic values and an election process, political pluralism, the Syrian people's right to choose a political, economic, and social system without pressure or interference from the outside, and other essential principles.

The document does not say anything about the drafting of a new constitution and political transition in Syria.
