Fire at Baumgarten gas hub in Austria now extinguished

MOSCOW. Dec 12 (Interfax) - The fire at the Baumgarten gas hub in Austria has now been extinguished, Gas Connect Austria said in a press release.

An explosion occurred on Tuesday morning before 9:00 a.m. on the grounds of the Baumgarten Natural Gas Station. One person was killed and 21 injured in the accident.

A 100 by 100 meter area was affected by the consequences of the explosion.

Gas Connect previously reported that the lone fatality and 18 injured personnel were all Austrians. It has now raised the number of injured to 21 and says the "slightly injured" include employees of contractors from six other countries. Nearly 250 firefighters were in action today in the course of the fire and over 40 rescue workers were immediately at the accident site, it said.

The accident has put a halt to the acceptance of Russian gas at the Baumgarten hub and to supply of Russian gas to countries located to the south and southwest of Austria, including Italy.
