Matviyenko expects Russian presidential election to strengthen civil unity

MOSCOW. Jan 17 (Interfax) - Federation Council speaker Valentina Matviyenko has called for ensuring a transparent presidential election and a high voter turnout, while preventing provocations and external interference.

"It is our duty as lawmakers and representatives of the federation's constituent territories to do our best and ensure the highest possible voter turnout in the presidential election, so that it strengthens civil unity and is held on an open and competitive basis in strict compliance with the law. Violations and provocations should not be allowed to happen," Matviyenko said in her opening remarks at the upper house's spring session.

Just like other entities, the Federation Council will invite foreign parliamentarians and representatives of inter-parliamentary organizations to observe the election, Matviyenko said.

"It is important to rule out any attempts at foreign interference in the election process," Matviyenko said.
