Aliyev to run for 4th term in office as Azerbaijani president - ruling party
BAKU. Feb 1 (Interfax) - Incumbent Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will be nominated by the country's ruling party Yeni Azerbaijan (New Azerbaijan) to run in the next presidential election, the party's executive director Ali Ahmedov told reporters on Thursday.
"Head of state Ilham Aliyev is the ruling party's candidate in the upcoming presidential elections," Ahmedov said.
The presidential election will be held in Azerbaijan on October 17, 2018.
In line with the amendments introduced into the Azerbaijani constitution in the autumn of 2016, the country's president will be elected for a seven-year term.
Ilham Aliyev is the son of Azerbaijan's former President Heydar Aliyev. He was born in Baku on December 24, 1961 and graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO).
Aliyev won Azerbaijan's presidential elections in 2003, 2008 and 2013.
