Over 9,000 Transdniestrian residents granted Russian citizenship in 2017 - Russian ambassador to Moldova

TIRASPOL. Feb 9 (Interfax) - Some 9,185 Transdniestrian residents were granted Russian citizenship at off-site away consular center in Tiraspol in 2017, Russian Ambassador to Moldova Farit Mukhametshin said at an expanded meeting of the Transdniestrian Foreign Ministry board on Friday.

He thanked Transdniestrian authorities for streamlining the operation of the consular center. "This is an enormous amount of work, which could not have been done without support from your Foreign Ministry and Interior Ministry," Mukhametshin said.

The ambassador also thanked Transdniestria for active effort to prepare to the Russian presidential election on March 18. Some 24 polling stations will be open in Transdniestria this time that is twice more than at the Duma elections in 2016. Besides, citizens will be allowed to vote at three polling stations designed only for peacekeepers and servicemen of the Operational Group of Russian Forces prior to this.
