FSB reports detention of people suspected of embezzlement in designing new stage of Theater of Europe in St. Petersburg

ST. PETERSBURG. Feb 21 (Interfax) - The Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) has opened a criminal case into the suspected embezzlement of 45 million rubles allotted from the federal budget for designing a new stage of the Academic Maly Drama Theater - Theater of Europe (MDT) in St. Petersburg.

The case has been opened on fraud charges, and a group of people is suspected of organizing the scheme, the FSB department for St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region said on Wednesday.

"At the present time, additional investigative procedures are being conducted to enlarge and consolidate the evidence basis. A number of suspects have been detained, and a decision on a pretrial restrictive measure against them has yet to be made," it said.

The construction of a new stage for the MDT should be completed by the end of 2019.
