MOSCOW. March 17 (Interfax) - The Syrian government forces are conducting an operation to destroy militants from Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organization (banned in Russia) in full compliance with the UN Security Council resolution, the Russian General Staff said.

"Acting strictly in accordance with the UN Security Council Resolution 2401 of February 24 of this year, the Syrian government troops are carrying out measures to destroy Jabhat al-Nusra militants holed up in Eastern Ghouta," Col. Gen. Sergei Rudskoi, head of the Main Operative Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces General Staff, said at a briefing on Saturday.

To avoid civilian casualties, the Russian reconciliation center helped introduce, from February 28, a humanitarian pause, organize escape routes for civilians and remove the sick and injured from Easter Ghouta, he said

"Today one can state that the situation in Eastern Ghouta has radically changed," Rudskoi said.
