People suspected of attempt on police, Russian Guard detained in Saratov region - Investigative Committee

MOSCOW. March 22 (Interfax) - Individuals suspected of an attempt to kill police and Russian National Guard officers have been detained in the Saratov region, the Investigative Committee press service said.

"Today officers of the police and the Russian Guard in the Saratov region carried out investigative operations in a criminal case. A meeting was scheduled with some informants believed to have something meaningful to communicate with regard to the case. Law enforcement officers arrived at the arranged place in the evening. The place is approximately 10 kilometers away from the village of Krasny Yar, Engels district, Saratov region. However, the persons with whom the meeting was arranged did not show up as agreed. Police and Russian Guard officers noticed a laptop computer at the meeting spot and came closer to look at it when there was a loud bang. As a result, one police officer and one Russian Guard employee were sent to hospital. They are receiving the necessary medical treatment," the committee's press service said in a statement obtained by Interfax on Thursday.

Following the incident, the Investigative Committee's Saratov region branch opened a criminal case over attempted murder and the illegal acquisition, transfer, sale, storage, transportation, or carrying of weapons, the press service said.

"Investigators of the Russian Investigative Committee in the city of Engels examined the crime scene. Suspects have been detained. Presently, their involvement in other crimes in the territory of the Saratov region is being checked. Appropriate investigatory activities aimed at establishing all the circumstances of the incident are under way," the press service said.
