Russian Defense Ministry plans to clean up Arctic garbage year early - deputy defense minister

MOSCOW. March 23 (Interfax) - The Russian Defense Ministry intends to complete the cleaning up the garbage accumulated in the Arctic one year before the deadline, Deputy Defense Minister Dmitry Bulgakov said.

"We brought barrels of fuel there for 70 years and now we are removing these containers. Someone needs to implement the program for the environmental clean-up of the Arctic by 2020. I hope we will complete this work a year before the deadline. We have already removed 16,000 tonnes of garbage. Moreover it was done over the course of only two years; to be more exact, two seasons when such work can be done in the Arctic zone," Bulgakov said in an interview with the Rossiyskaya Gazeta published on Friday.

"We will relocate our environmental units with all their modern equipment to Zapolyarye by June 15," he said.
